OVERALL REFLECTION

EXPERIENCE
Throughout the Advanced Typography module, each assignment pushed me to challenge my usual way of thinking about type. From expressive experiments to type creation and application, I was constantly navigating between visual intuition and structured design systems. I experienced moments of frustration—especially during the type creation process—but also breakthroughs that came from trial and error. Designing with purpose (like making a font for dyslexic readers) made me slow down and think more empathetically, not just creatively. I felt both limited and liberated by the rules of typography, depending on the task. Overall, the experience was intense, layered, and sometimes overwhelming—but in a good way. It forced me to grow.

OBSERVATIONS
I noticed how typography, even at its most subtle, carries strong visual tone. The way something is spaced, curved, or sized can immediately suggest mood, identity, or purpose. I also observed how easy it is to unintentionally prioritize style over function, especially when designing fonts or layouts. During the dyslexic type exploration, I became more sensitive to how small adjustments—like letter width, x-height, or spacing—can completely change legibility for different audiences. In the final compilation stage, I observed how a single typeface can shift tone entirely depending on how it’s applied in context (motion graphics, posters, interfaces, etc.). Typography isn’t fixed—it adapts.

FINDINGS
One key finding was that typography is less about decoration and more about communication. Every typographic choice sends a message, consciously or unconsciously. I found that accessibility is often overlooked in type design, and designing with inclusivity in mind brought depth and purpose to my work. I also learned that expressive typography can co-exist with clarity if done intentionally. Additionally, I found that consistency in application (spacing, hierarchy, contrast) is what gives type systems their strength. Most importantly, I realized that my role as a designer is not just to make things look good—but to make them work well, for everyone.
