Throughout this module, I developed three connected outcomes from the same research: the dissertation, the KREATE journal article and the visual e-publication, The Hierarchy Study. The study looked at how typography affects what young adults notice, understand, remember and engage with in social media advertisements. The findings showed that text size had the strongest effect, while bold text, contrast and central placement also helped important information stand out. At the same time, smaller details such as pricing, platform information and terms and conditions were often missed, showing that typography can guide attention but cannot create engagement by itself.
The dissertation was the most challenging part because I had to organise the literature review, findings and discussion without repeating the same points. I also had to make sure that my conclusions were supported by the data, even when the results did not fully match what I expected. Revising sections because of the Turnitin AI detection score was frustrating, but it made me more aware of my own writing style and how easily academic writing can start to sound too polished or repetitive.
Turning the dissertation into the KREATE article taught me how to reduce content without losing the main purpose of the study. The publication then allowed me to apply the findings visually through the “Remembered / Forgotten” direction. Information with stronger recall was shown through bold and clear typography, while weaker recall was represented through fading, repetition and quieter elements.
Overall, the module helped me understand how the same research can be communicated in different ways. It also showed me that research and design work better when they develop together, as the findings can guide the visual direction and make the final outcome more meaningful.
