LECTURE NOTES

Week 1
We were briefed on the upcoming tasks and projects as well as course requirements before forming our groups. We were divided into four groups for our Project 2's Kinetic Typography project. We also found our partners for our pairs project as well.

Week 2
In this week, we were briefed further on our assignments, focusing mainly on the group project. Then, we had to decide on our song for the project before moving on to designing our slides for a quick presentation. We were to present a quick laydown of what makes a bad and good infographic.

EXERCISE 1 | QUANTIFY DATA

For the first exercise, we need to collect a large quantity of materials that have different identifying features. I first thought of M&M's but Mr Kannan advised me to choose something else as the candies have a uniform shape and no other differentiating features besides colour.

I ended up going with buttons as I had a large mix of variety. I first started with collecting and grouping the buttons together. Then I categorized them by number of holes, sizing, finishing as well as colour. I ended up designing a layout that represented a city.

I tried to labelling them based on each section and giving each area a title. Since this is a city based design, I had the idea of doing neighbourhoods and apartments. Each area has houses made out of buttons with each area focusing on a different set of buttons with different number of holes. This is the final exercise outcome.

EXERCISE 2 | L.A.T.C.H INFOGRAPHIC

We were tasked to design a poster that implemented a minimum of four L.A.T.C.H principles. Mr Kannan advised us to focus on Pokemon, so I went to read up and research more about the topic. I also checked out the website link he shared. However, I eventually decided to pivot my topic focus to something I personally had more knowledge and interest about, which was dinosaurs. Dinosaurs as a whole is a large topic thus I focused on specifically the dinosaurs from the movies of Jurassic Park III and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. This is because these movies focused primarily on the events on Isla Sorna.

The original idea was to do the three main islands; Isla Sorna, Isla Nublar and Ile Saint Hubert. However, due to the constraints of time and it being a festive season, I ended up deciding to focus solely on Isla Sorna. I used this website linked below to research further on the island and the specific dinosaurs.

I decided to go towards a style that reflected a theme park directory map. I took inspiration from this Disneyland Park map. So I started off the process in Procreate before moving on to Illustrator.

I added a blue gradient as my background to sort of mimic how the ocean would look like. We were allowed to use existing assets online for our monsters so I looked for images of dinosaurs online. However, they didn't really fit so I put them into Gemini to turn it into more of an illustration style.

To fulfil the requirements of the assignment, I used four principles of L.A.T.C.H; Location, Category, Time and Hierarchy. Some of the principles are more obvious than others so I added a key notes section to guide the viewer.

After I added in some more visual details as well as a short description on what the poster is about and this was the final submission piece.
